Questions
What happens in our first session?
It’s a chance to get to know each other a little more. We’ll talk about what’s brought you to counselling and what you’d like from it, and think together about how long you might want to come. You don’t need to prepare anything, and you can share as much or as little as feels right.
How do online sessions work?
Sessions are on Zoom. I’ll send you a link before our first session, and it stays the same each week. Choose a quiet, private place where you won’t be disturbed. If the connection drops, log back in and I’ll be waiting. If we can’t reconnect within 10 minutes, I’ll phone or email to rearrange, at no extra cost.
How often will we meet, and for how long?
Sessions are 50 minutes, usually at the same time each week. Weekly works best, but fortnightly sessions are available if you’d prefer to meet that way. In our first session we’ll talk about what you’d like from counselling and how long you might want to come. Every five or six sessions we review how it’s going, and you’re free to pause or stop at any time.
What if I’m not the right counsellor for you?
That’s partly what the free call is for. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit, or I think someone else could help you better, I’ll say so honestly and help you find other support.
How do I pay?
Each session is £65, paid in advance by bank transfer. I’ll send you the details when we agree to work together.
What if I need to cancel?
I ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange a session. Sessions cancelled with less notice are charged in full, though I may make an exception when something is unavoidable. Wherever we can, we’ll find another time that week.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes, with a few rare exceptions: if someone is at serious risk of harm, if a child or vulnerable adult is at risk, if you tell me about terrorism or serious crime, or if a court requires it. Wherever possible, I’d talk with you first. Like all counsellors, I discuss my work with a clinical supervisor, who is also bound by confidentiality. See my privacy notice for how I look after your information.
What if I have a concern about our work?
Please tell me. Feedback is always welcome. I work to the BACP Ethical Framework, and if you’re unhappy with my practice you can also use BACP’s Professional Conduct Procedure.
Get in touch
If you have a question, or would rather not book online, email or call me. You don’t need to be ready to book, and a couple of lines is plenty.
I reply on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, so if you haven’t heard back, please check your junk folder. Everything you send is confidential (see my privacy notice), but email isn’t suitable for urgent help. If you need support now, please use one of these crisis lines.
